Two youngsters from rival New York City gangs fall in love, but tensions between their respective friends build toward tragedy.

In the slums of the upper West Side of Manhattan, New York, a gang of Polish-American teenagers called the Jets compete with a rival gang of recently immigrated Puerto Ricans, the Sharks, to "own" the neighborhood streets. Tensions are high between the gangs but two kids, one from each rival gang, fall in love leading to tragedy.

A documentary which shows, in great detail, the making of the 1985 Bernstein-conducted recording of the entire score of "West Side Story", featuring operatic stars.

Jazz pianist Dave Grusin is joined by artists from the worlds of jazz (Bill Evans, Michael Brecker, Lee Ritenour) and Latin music (Gloria Estefan, on Secada) -- as well as one virtuoso trumpeter who embraces both styles, Arturo Sandoval -- for this performance of songs from the famed musical by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. This outstanding concert DVD was originally recorded in 1985. The master tapes were thought to have been lost in a fire, but were discovered in 2000, along with the original "surround sound" master.
